Equine Vaccinations

Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis (EEE)/Sleeping Sickness

When: annual vaccine
What: mosquito-borne viral infection of humans & horses, usually fatal in less than 3 days. reservoirs are birds & rodents
Who: any age, especially those near water reservoir
Western Equine Encephalomyelitis (WEE)/Sleeping Sickness
When: annual vaccine
What: mosquito-borne viral infection of humans & horses. birds are reservoirs
Who: any age, esp. those near water reservoir
Tetanus (lockjaw)
When: annual vaccine in spring, booster 3-4 weeks after initial vaccination, give booster to horse with wound if hasn't been vaccinated within 6 months
What: bacterial infection via soil or wound contamination from manure. high mortality rate even with treatment
Who: any age
Equine Herpes Virus (Rhinopneumonitis)
When: pregnant mares should receive the killed form (pneumabort) at 5,7,9 months of pregnancy to prevent abortion, horses that travel or reside in boarding or show barns should receive the vaccine twice yearly in spring & fall (horses in closed herds that do not travel may elect to not receive the vaccine)
What: viral infection causing respiratory, abortion & neurological syndromes, vaccine not protective against neurological form, moderately effective against respiratory form
Who: respiratory-most severe in young horses, abortion-pregnant mares, neurological-any age
Equine Influenza Virus
When: twice yearly vaccine in spring & fall, booster initial vaccine in 3-4 weeks
What: viral respiratory disease often leading to bacterial pneumonia
Who: any age, especially horses with high exposure to other horses (e.g. shows, competitions, barns)
West Nile Virus
When: twice yearly vaccine in spring & fall, booster 3-4 weeks after initial vaccination
What: mosquito-borne viral infection of humans, horses & dogs. clinical signs include depression, ataxia, muscle twitching & fever with a high mortality rate. birds are the reservoir.
Who: any age, especially those near water reservoir
Streptococcus Equi (Strangles)
When: twice yearly with intranasal vaccine
What: bacterial upper respiratory disease, very contagious & horses can contract it repeatedly
Who: most severe in young horses, especially traveling or in show barns
Rabies
When: annual vaccination (Arkansas is an endemic area)
What: fatal central nervous system viral infection spread by a bite of an infected animal. NO TREATMENT reservoirs are wild animals, especially skunks, bats, wild cats
Who: any horse over 4 months of age
